Mechanical strength characterization and modeling of hydroxyapatite/tricalcium phosphate biocomposite using the diametral-compression test

This study reports the enhanced mechanical resistance of composite bioceramics hydroxyapatite (HAP) and tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) used as bone substitute. HAP/β-TCP mixture was prepared by wet mixing powders characterized. Effects powder manufacturing sintering temperature on densification, microstructure properties were studied. The rupture strength ( σ r ) calculated using Brazilian test. At 1250 °C, relative density ceramics reached maximum value 89% 43 MPa, respectively. Experimental results modeled finite element method to determine stress distribution in compacted disc.
